Q - I saw the mind blowing 「Kataomoi Finally」music video.

Matsui (Ju) - Great, please go ahead and loop it (laugh).

Takayanagi - It’s completely different from what we’ve done before with the main theme being homosexuality and the MV also containing scenes of bullying.

Matsui (Re) - The first time fans were presented the video, they were extremely surprised.

Matsui (Ju) - Especially during the scene where Non (Kimoto) and Kuumin (Yagami) exchange a kiss, there were 「Youhoooo～!!」in the audience, everybody got excited (laugh).

Yagami - Though of course it was embarrassing for us.

Kimoto - During the handshake event which followed the 1st public screening of the MV, when I was asked about that scene I could only answer 「It was embarrassing」.

Q - Did you had any difficulties looking at each other after shooting that scene?

Kimoto - Not at all. It didn’t change anything.

Yagami - Just before shooting we were chatting normally and after the first try when were heard 「We’re shooting it a second time」, we kept talking like we always do.

Q - Passed astounding MV, the theme of the song is “Feelings you can’t stop” right?

Yagami - It is. And so there are lyrics like “Those feelings I’ve always kept for myself” or “There are no rules when it comes to fall in love”.

Takayanagi - In our 2nd single 「Aozora Kataomoi」this unrequited love was between a girl and a boy, but this time around it’s about two girls. It reminded me how there were all sorts of one-sided feelings in this world.

Matsui (Re) - The tune is also totally new this time. From the opening to the chorus, rhythm is progressively growing more and more frantic and then A melo, B melo and chorus all have a different tempo. It’s the first time we have such variety and modulations in one of our song.

Takayanagi - However this is such a change for SKE48 that fans seem a bit puzzled during lives. Like Rena said, there are frantic parts here and there but it’s not one of those songs where you can go all out from start to end.

Yagami - Hmm, what’s the best way for everyone to enjoy it then?

Takayanagi - What about repeating “Suki nanda, kimiga suki nanda” altogether?

Matsui (Ju) - Don’t you want to hear the audience shout the last part “Zutto suki dattanda～”? (tln : “I’ve always loved you”)

Takayanagi - Sure. It would be a great display of love toward SKE48 (laugh).

Matsui (Re) - One more thing for the chorus. What about adding the name of the one you like?

Matsui (Ju) - Like “Suki nanda, Rena ga suki nanda”?

Matsui (Re) - I honestly think it would be fun to do that.

Matsui (Ju) - Urg, too bad! “Ju-Ri-Na” won’t fit in the lyrics (laugh).

Kimoto - When I first listened to this song I thought “Finally SKE48 is going to tackle a cool song!”. That’s the kind of song I personally dig, so I wish people who have loved SKE48 for its high spirit songs so far and those who love this cool kind of songs will both appreciate this release.

Which form of love would you opt for?

Q - In this 8th release, love songs are prominent right?

Matsui (Ju) - They are. Shiro gumi’s 「Hanikami Lollipop」is about admiring love itself. I hope fans will listen to this song thinking about the one they like, with a smile on their face.

Matsui (Re) - Aka gumi’s song 「Koe ga Kasurerukurai」 is about a burning love which consumes you from the inside. It holds on this stinging feeling that some people are ready to destroy themselves for the other.

Kimoto - Selection 8’s「Kamoku na Tsuki」is a romantic song which theme is 「I’ll follow this clumsy boy」. It’s possibly the only one depicting mutual feeling in this release.

Q - Among all those songs depicting love under different lights, is there one you’re finding more drawn to than the others?

Kimoto - For me it would be「Kamoku na Tsuki」. I’m sure there are all sorts of romances a girl can come across as she grows up but for now I think it would be nice to have such a shy boyfriend. Also looking at the lyrics, I feel like I’m reading one of my beloved shoujo manga.

Matsui (Re) - I’d also probably pick 「Kamoku na Tsuki」. Somehow in this song the boy seems to come out from a fairy tale and despite his awkwardness he must be a reliable person. I’d probably want to follow such a person as I really yearn for this kind of personality. I think it’s good to listen to 「Kamoku na Tsuki」having delusions about how much of a trustworthy boy must hide inside this silhouette you follow from behind, just like if you were one of those heroines from Kanon’s shoujo manga. 

Yagami - For me it’s 「Koe ga Kasurerugurai」. If I had to pick one, I’d say I prefer being the one going after the other so I’m rather fond of painful love stories.

Matsui  (Ju) - Me, 「Hanikami Lollipop」. I like its typical “girly” view on romance and lyrics are cute, building a pleasant fairy-tale atmosphere too.

Takayanagi - I opt for 「Kataomoi Finally」. There is just this sentence 「All your friends around you are shocked」you know. I would understand if your own friends were shocked, but why do the friends of the other one, the one you’ve fallen for, have to be?

Yagami - Maybe because even if she doesn’t have realize it yet, people around have noticed “I”’s feelings. (tln : “I” = “boku” in the text and in the lyrics. Usually used by boys to refer to themselves. It made some people, even members at some point, say that the song was told from a guy point of view but this interview says otherwise. Free of interpretation really.)

Matsui (Ju) - Or they are shocked to hear that she actually shared his/her feelings and that their love was mutual 「Why didn’t you confess earlier?!」. Or even, maybe she doesn’t like “I” and tells everyone 「No way he/she is interested in me.」when him/her secretly thinks 「Don’t push me away.」.

Matsui (Re) - Both are viable interpretations. Unrequited love and mutual feelings.

Takayanagi - I first thought it was a clear and straight song but investigation the lyrics a bit more there is more to it than I expected.

Matsui  (Ju) - But the main focus of the song is still to convey with force your earnest feelings. With Valentines drawing near, I hope listening to this title will give people the courage they need to face and share their feelings.

Yagami - And not only for confessions, it would be great if the song gave you courage for whenever you need it.

Matsui (Re) - With its MV and lyrics allowing several interpretations, 「Kataomoi Finally」is nothing close to conventional. I hope you’ll enjoy its many aspects.
